In November 2017, Manini Holdings (property management), Ride the Breaks (cultural event organizers), Kumu Keala Ching and our company developed a mural project to share with the community of Kailua Kona, Hawai’i. The theme of the mural organically developed into a theme to honor the agricultural season called the “Makahiki”. The Makahiki season begins in late October or early November when the Pleiades constellation was first observed rising above the horizon at sunset, the Makahiki period goes for four months during the time of rough seas, high winds, storms and heavy rains.
Kumu Keala Ching and our Creative Director developed an idea to start the mural from the shoreline (makai) and end in the mountains (mauka) and illustrate all vegetation and medicinal plant life through the mural’s journey. To honor our ancestors we painted Hawaiian sacred sites of worship (heiau) at the beginning and the end of the mural.
During the process we were honored in having Pua Case, Hāwane Rios and Nikki Collins sing (mele) and chants which filled the painting space with beautiful harmonies.
The mural was completed with a very special ceremony held at Ahu’ena Heiau located at King Kamehameha Hotel in Kailua, Kona where Kumu Keala Ching chanted to honor Lono and and the season of Makahiki. Special mahalo nui loa to Ken Swift, Yaro, Mattson, Manini Holding staff, Gidget of Kona Seaside, Kona Brew company, Nikki Collins, Kumu Keala Ching, Toymunkee videography and all artist who participated in the mural.
